Signs to act on

When to call about emergency water removal

  • Standing water on floors or in a garage
  • Carpet that squelches when you step on it
  • Water spreading from a water heater, washer or dishwasher
  • Water coming in under doors after heavy rain
  • A burst supply line that soaked a room
  • Water collecting along baseboards

What is emergency water removal?

Emergency water removal is the first stage of a water damage job: getting standing water out of the building before it soaks further into floors, walls and furniture. Providers use submersible pumps for deep water and extractors for floors and carpet, then hand the job over to drying.

It is called emergency work because water does not stay put. Within hours it wicks up drywall, spreads under flooring and seeps into cabinets. Every gallon removed early is a gallon that does not have to be dried out of the structure later.

When to call for water removal

Call when water is standing on floors, when carpet is soaked through, when an appliance or supply line has emptied into a room, or when rain or creek water has come into the house. If you can still see water moving, close the main shut-off valve first if you can reach it safely.

Clean water, gray water and black water

Restoration providers group water by how contaminated it is. Clean water comes from a supply line or a failed fitting. Gray water, such as washing machine or dishwasher discharge, carries some contamination. Black water comes from sewage or outside flooding and needs protective handling and removal of porous materials it touched. The type of water decides what can be kept, so mention the source when you call.

What the extraction usually includes

  1. A safety check of power, sagging ceilings and slip hazards.
  2. Pumping deep water with submersible pumps.
  3. Extracting floors and carpet with truck-mounted or portable units.
  4. Removing saturated carpet pad that cannot be dried.
  5. Moving contents off wet floors and documenting the damage.

Water removal in Central Texas homes

Most homes in the area sit on concrete slabs, so water spreads sideways under flooring and along the base of walls rather than draining into a crawlspace. Garages, utility rooms and rooms beside them are often the first to collect water from a failed water heater or washer. After heavy rain, water can also come in under exterior doors on lower lots near creeks.

What affects the cost of water removal

The provider explains costs after seeing the property. The main factors are how much water there is, how far it spread, the type of water, the flooring involved and how long the water sat before extraction.

How it works

How emergency water removal usually works

Start with a call(512) 729-9827
  1. 1

    Safety and source

Power to wet areas is checked, and the source of the water is stopped or confirmed stopped.

  2. 2

    Standing water pumped out

Submersible pumps handle deep water; truck-mounted or portable extractors pull water from floors.

  3. 3

    Carpet and pad extracted

Weighted or wand extraction pulls water out of carpet and pad, and pad that cannot be saved is removed.

  4. 4

    Ready for drying

With the bulk water gone, air movers and dehumidifiers can start drying the structure.

FAQ

Emergency Water Removal: common questions

What is the difference between water removal and water extraction?

The terms overlap. Water removal usually means getting standing water out with pumps and vacuums. Extraction usually means pulling water out of carpet, pad and other materials. Most emergency jobs need both.

Can I use a shop vacuum instead?

A wet vacuum helps with a small spill of clean water. It cannot pull much water out of carpet pad, subfloors or wall bottoms, and it does nothing for water that has already soaked in.

Is it safe to stay in the house?

Stay out of rooms with standing water if the power is on there, and out of rooms where the ceiling sags. If the water came from a sewer line or a flood, keep children and pets away from it.

What should I do before the provider arrives?

Close the main water valve if the source is a pipe, move valuables off wet floors, and photograph the damage. Do not use household fans or vacuums on contaminated water.
